Final call for input to the APF Strategic
Plan
|
|
HURRY - We need your
feedback before 25 June 2011
Calling all Members!
The APF Board is currently developing the APF's Strategic Plan
with a series of Workshops having been conducted. At the recent
APF Conference in Cairns a workshop was held with the results of
these efforts now posted onto the APF website as a DRAFT STATEGIC
PLAN and all members are encouraged to visit this section and
make contribution in the tables provided. The APF's 'current
Strategic Plan' is also available on the APF Website for
comparison.
Why have a Strategic Plan?
Strategic thoughts, planning and actions are
increasingly important to the continued viability and
effectiveness of 'Not for Profit' organisation such as the
APF. Without strategic planning it is unlikely that we will
be able to successfully meet the numerous challenges that face us
today and into the future. With an ever changing
environment our organisation needs to:
1.exercise as much discretion as possible in the
areas under our control to ensure responsiveness to our
stake-holders.
2.develop good strategies to deal with our changing
circumstances.
3.develop a coherent and defensible basis for all
decision making.
What is Strategic
Planning?
It is a disciplined effort to produce fundamental
decisions and actions that shape the nature and direction of our
organisation's activities within legal bounds! Put simply -
identify what is TRULY important to us and then put together a
plan for how to make it all happen! Whilst it is important
to be practical it is also important to have some 'dreams' or
'visions'. It must be technically workable, politically
acceptable to key stakeholders, and must align with our
organisations philosophy and core values.
have your say and send us your feedback - responses need to be
submitted before 25 June 2011.
We thankyou for your input!

Check Yourself Before You
Wreck Yourself
Whether you are making your first jump or your 10,000th, flying
on your belly or standing on your head, you must rely on your
equipment for you to survive jumping from an airplane. So, if
equipment is such a critical part of survival, doesn't it make
sense to make sure yours is ready for you to jump before every
single skydive?
Every year, skydivers continue to have incidents that they could
have easily prevented with a simple gear check. Many of these
incidents-such as premature deployments-have no negative
repercussions. However, others-for instance, premature
deployments that caused a collision with the airplane or another
jumper-have led to fatalities and total destruction of an
aircraft.
Vigilant jumpers have saved many others over the years by
discovering problems with their equipment. With simple gear
checks, attentive skydivers have caught all sorts of errors, from
comfort issues (such as a twisted leg strap) to more serious
issues (such as a misrouted chest strap, leg strap or bridle)
that could have led to a fatal accident.
It is hard to say why some jumpers never bother with a quick gear
check. At some drop zones, it may be a cultural thing.
("Nobody 'cool' gets a pin check, so neither will I.")
Maybe these jumpers have not had much training on gear checks and
never really learned about the importance of making sure their
gear is in order before exiting the airplane. Or maybe they just
haven't ever thought much about it and don't really worry about
getting a gear check because they have never had a problem. But a
gear check is a simple process, and it takes just a few seconds.
The "check of threes" is an easy method to keep track
of your gear checks. Check your three straps (the chest strap and
two leg straps), your three handles (the main deployment handle,
cutaway handle and reserve ripcord handle) three times (before putting
on the rig, before boarding the aircraft and before exiting the
aircraft). Be sure to check your three ring system. Ask another
jumper to check your main closing pin and your reserve closing
pin (if possible) before you exit. Now your gear check is
complete, and you can focus on your skydive, knowing your gear is
ready to go.
A drop zone's DZSO, school staff and licensed jumpers (especially
the more experienced jumpers) have the ability to influence
others to make gear checks a part of everyone's pre-jump process.
If the movers and shakers at a drop zone make gear checks a part
of their pre-jump routines, you can bet that all of the other
jumpers will do so also. And then, suddenly, gear checks will be
cool.
