In Remembrance: RIP Ted Strong
|
|

The APF was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of
a true Skydiving legend: 75 year old Ted Strong, who lost his life last Friday
in a military training accident, ending more than 50 years of
innovating the industry and introducing millions to the sport.
Ted started skydiving in 1958 and in 1961 started Strong
Enterprises, a parachute company out of his parent's
basement. Strong moved the company to Orlando in 1976, when he
was inspired to develop the tandem sky-diving system that would
revolutionize the sport.
In 2002 Ted was given the United States Parachute
Association's Meritorious Service award, and he was inducted into
the first class of the Skydiving Hall of Fame last year.
The APF was very fortunate this year to have Ted
return to Australian shores, and with his lovely wife Marcie,
attend the Annual APF Conference in Cairns NQ in May.

Call for Tenders: APF Skydiving Magazine
|
|
The Australian Parachute
Federation
CALLING FOR TENDERS
TO
Produce the APF's
principal publication (Skydiving Magazine) for conveying
information to members.
The APF has enjoyed a long standing and mutually
rewarding involvement with the existing Skydiving Magazine and
members would all be familiar with the quality and content of
this publication.
However, with the current contract now due for
renewal, the Board of Directors has decided that in the interest
of 'due diligence' the option to produce a Skydiving Magazine as
the vehicle for relaying information to members, should be put up
for Tender.
Subsequently, the document that provides the
criteria for tender can be found on our website here.
Tender applications are to be received no later than 5pm 30/11/2011 to the Chief Executive Officer
at ceo@apf.asn.au,
or by post: PO Box 1440, Springwood, Queensland, 4127.

|
A call for tenders and
expressions of interest is being
extended to all APF members. The APF Technical Directors are
elected each year at the Annual Board Meeting. This years'
meeting will be held in November and all APF positions will be
declared vacant.

future development and sustainability of the APF and to assist in
the implementation of the APF's Strategic Plan. Those members who
have the ability and desire to lead, guide and educate in any of
the various Technical Director positions should direct their
enquiries to the CEO.
The Director Instructors, Don Cross, has tendered his resignation
due to overwhelming work commitments outside APF responsibilities
however Don will remain in an advisory role to assist the newly
elected.
The Technical Director positions are:
¡¤ Director Safety
¡¤ Director Instructors
¡¤ Director Aircraft Operations
¡¤ Director Rigging
¡¤ Director Competition
¡¤ Director Judges
The individual job specifications and KPI's for each Technical
Director position can be found on the APF Website.
The role of each Technical Director also includes a position on
the APF Management Committee which is a consolidation of
positions to which the Board of Directors has delegated
significant authority with the responsibility to implement the
strategic plan.
Nominations and submissions must be
made to the CEO by 30 October 2011. If you would
like to lodge your interest in applying for any of these
positions or have further questions please contact the CEO at the

From
Parachutist Oct 11 | Vol 52, Number 10 | Issue 624
In an effort to reduce the number of skydiving-related lawsuits,
SSK Industries has made available a warning poster for use at
drop zones. The poster includes a variety of warnings but focuses
on the capabilities, expectations and limitations of automatic
activation devices (AADs), specifically those of the Airtec
CYPRES AAD. Downloadable from http://www.cypres-usa.com/

FULL PSB-7
Mandatory:
before next jump
Identification:
Vigil AAD, All Cutters produced in October 2007
Background:
An incident occurred on the 14th September 2011 in Canada. A
skydiver failed to deploy his main canopy and manually pulled his
reserve handle with insufficient altitude to fully deploy the
reserve canopy.
Compliance:
During the investigation of the incident it was discovered that
the loop was neither cut nor trapped by the cutter. The
preliminary report stated that the knife blade was missing.
In the interests of safety AAD has decided to recall all cutters
from their October 2007 batch.
List of serial numbers is provided on the PSB-7.
The PSB also describes a field test to be performed on any Vigil
Cutter to determine presence or lack of a knife blade.
The PSB notes that all Cutters manufactured from June 2008 have
been x-rayed as part of the quality control process.
For additional safety, the manufacturer is recommending that the
field test be performed on each cutter manufactured before June
2008.

report prepared by the Royal Military Academy October 3rd
2011 - as referenced in the Vigil PSB-7
